In the 1970s, German science journalist Sebastian Leitner proposed a method to efficiently use flashcards. The system uses multiple boxes. Correctly answered cards graduate to a less frequent review box; incorrectly answered cards are demoted back to the daily review box.

While brilliant, the physical Leitner system requires immense discipline to maintain. Shuffling hundreds of paper cards between boxes daily is tedious and prone to human error.

The Digital Evolution

Modern applications digitize the Leitner logic, replacing physical boxes with precise, to-the-minute algorithmic scheduling. Algorithms like SM-2 and neural-network-based spacing calculate the optimal review time for each specific word, entirely automating the review schedule.
